Your Perfect 3-Day Spring Getaway in San Diego

By Humphreys Half Moon Inn

Spring is one of the best times to visit San Diego, with warm, sunny days, coastal breezes, and plenty of seasonal experiences to enjoy. From wandering through colorful flower fields to walking along the waterfront or catching a sunset by the cliffs, it’s the perfect setting for a laid-back getaway.

If you’re wondering how to spend a long weekend here, three days is a great place to start. With the right mix of beach time, local spots, and a few must-see attractions, you can experience the best of San Diego without feeling rushed.

This 3-day San Diego spring itinerary is designed to help you do just that, with easy ideas for what to see, where to go, and how to make the most of your time. Settle in with us here at Humphreys Half Moon Inn on Shelter Island, a relaxed waterfront retreat that keeps you close to the bay, downtown, and some of the city’s most scenic coastal views.

Day One:

Morning

ding room with marina view

Start the day with a leisurely breakfast or brunch with a water view at Humphreys SoCAL Dining and treat yourself to our famous Lobster Omelet or Vanilla Strawberry French Toast and a Bloody Mary (or two!) to prepare for a day of exploring the spring flowers in San Diego.

Afternoon

large field of flowers in carlsbad

Get your spring vacation in San Diego started off right with a visit to the popular San Diego Flower Fields. Spend some time among the blooms at popular Balboa Park in the beautiful rose gardens and the manicured area around the botanical building with the lily pond. It’s also worth the drive out to the Carlsbad Flower Fields, where you will be greeted by 80 million vibrant blooms! Such a sight to see that you won’t want to miss during your spring vacation to San Diego.

Evening

Sunset over the bay from a cliff side

The best part of the day in San Diego is sunset, because we have the most amazing views! Visit nearby Sunset Cliffs for the most gorgeous scenes and reminisce about the fun you had spending the day in San Diego. After a relaxing sunset show, prepare to be wowed with dinner and waterfront and city views at Coasterra! Here you will find the most amazing modern Mexican menu with Baja-inspired cuisine like the Ahi Tuna Tostada and the Mexican Paella for two… and some of the best coconut margaritas in town!

Wrap Up the Day

terrace fire pit

End the evening with a glass of wine at our Fireside Terrace, surrounded by tiki torches and palm trees, then settle in for our nightly movie nights under the stars, starting at sunset on the lawn.

Day Two:

Morning

Rise and shine to an invigorating stroll along the Shelter Island walking path. Enjoy marina views, coastal scenes, and people watching as you make your way to Portside Coffee & Gelato for morning fuel of a Mocha Freeze or Caramel Macchiato and a Breakfast Burrito or Acai Bowl.

Afternoon

Belmont Park roller coaster

The next stop on your 3-day San Diego adventure is popular Belmont Park, right beside Mission Beach, where you have your choice of activities, events, and experiences to enjoy. The fun starts at Escapology, San Diego's premier escape room with a live-action game with themed rooms filled with clues to help you make it to the next stage! The San Diego vacation fun continues with the rides and attractions at the seaside amusement park, which celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. Choose from exciting activities like laser tag, mini-golf, arcade games, rock wall climbing, and more!

Evening

drink overlooking beach

Since you’re already at Belmont Park, it’s a great time to grab dinner nearby at Cannonball. This popular rooftop restaurant features one of the largest oceanfront rooftop patios in San Diego, with sweeping beach views that are especially beautiful around sunset. The menu leans into fresh sushi and coastal favorites, making it an easy, laid-back spot to unwind after a day by the water.

After dinner, take a short stroll for something sweet at The Baked Bear, a local favorite known for its custom ice cream sandwiches made with warm cookies and house-churned ice cream.

Wrap Up the Day

End the evening with a relaxing soak in the outdoor jacuzzi, surrounded by swaying palms and warm island-inspired ambiance. It’s the perfect way to unwind, with a calm, tropical setting that makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the night.

Day Three:

Morning

Oasis Pool Bar

Take a morning dip in the pool at Humphreys and soak in the SoCal sunshine, then enjoy an early lunch from the Oasis Pool Bar & Bites. The Shrimp Tacos or Wagyu Sliders are the perfect treat along with a Blueberry Lemonade or Pina Colada for a tropical vibe!

The History of Humphreys Concerts by the bay

CONCERT

Founded in 1982 by Rob Hagey as a jazz bar, the original Humphreys had just a couple of hundred plastic tables for concertgoers in San Diego. That didn't last long, though, because Humphreys Concerts by the bay quickly grew due to the popular demand for live music. By 1985, there were rows of chairs that could accommodate 650 fans, who could conveniently stay with us at Humphreys Half Moon Inn with the popular “concert and stay" packages. Today, the tradition continues with a 1,400 seat waterfront venue that has been sharing the stage with some of the best bands and artists in the world for over 40 years.

Past notable artists that have performed at Humphreys Concerts by the bay over the years include Alice Cooper, Aretha Franklin, Jimmy Buffett, John Legend, Roy Orbison, Tony Bennett, Dana Carvey, and so much more!

Why is a Concert at Humphreys Concerts by the bay So Unique?

From the moment you arrive, the marina views, palm-lined paths, and laid-back island atmosphere signal one simple truth: it is time to relax.

Why January Is One of the Best Times to Visit San Diego

Winter in San Diego looks a little different, and that is part of the magic. January brings mild temperatures, sunny days, and far fewer crowds, allowing you to experience the city at a slower, more enjoyable pace. Beaches are quieter, dining feels unhurried, and exploring is easier without the bustle of peak travel season. It is the perfect backdrop for a reset focused on ease, wellness, and simple pleasures.

Your Reset Begins the Moment You Arrive

Your wellness getaway starts as soon as you step onto Shelter Island. The calm rhythm of the marina, gentle ocean breezes, and tropical landscaping create an immediate sense of escape. There is no packed itinerary here, just space to slow down and do what feels good.

Start your mornings with a leisurely breakfast by the bay at Humphreys SoCAL Dining & Music, sipping coffee as boats drift past. Spend your afternoons enjoying sunshine, fresh air, and movement at your own pace. When evening arrives, let the glow of the marina set the tone for a perfectly relaxed night.

Resort-Style Relaxation, All in One Place

One of the best parts of staying at Humphreys Half Moon Inn is that everything you need for a restorative getaway is right onsite. Enjoy waterfront dining with standout dishes like Crab Cakes, Lobster Risotto, and Grilled Filet. Spend your evenings at Humphreys Backstage LIVE, where creative cocktails and live music pair beautifully with bay views. Wind down by the outdoor firepits, take a dip in the heated pool or hot tub, or treat yourself to an onsite massage overlooking the marina. Every experience is designed to help you relax, without effort.

Easy Outdoor Activities to Enjoy at Your Own Pace

San Diego’s winter weather makes January an ideal time to get outside without crowds or overexertion. Humphreys’ Shelter Island location offers effortless access to outdoor activities that feel restorative rather than exhausting.

Bike the Bayfront

Guests enjoy complimentary daily bicycle rentals, making it easy to explore Shelter Island’s scenic waterfront path. This flat, peaceful ride offers nonstop bay views, fresh air, and plenty of opportunities to pause and take it all in.

Paddleboarding and Kayaking

Kayaking

With direct access to the marina, guests can step right onto the calm waters of San Diego Bay. Paddleboarding and kayaking are relaxing ways to enjoy time on the water while soaking in views of the harbor and skyline.

Waterfront Walks and Harbor Watching

Prefer to stay on land? Shelter Island’s walking paths are ideal for gentle strolls. Watch sailboats glide by, spot seabirds, or simply enjoy the rhythmic calm of the harbor. It is one of the most peaceful ways to reset.

Sunrise and Sunset Moments by the Water

Some of the most memorable moments at Humphreys are also the simplest. Start your day with sunrise views over the marina or end it watching the sky shift colors as the sun sets over the bay. Whether enjoyed from your balcony, the firepits, or along the waterfront path, these quiet rituals add a sense of mindfulness to your stay.

Wellness Without the Pressure

a woman relaxing in her room

A Humphreys getaway is about wellness that feels natural, not scheduled or overwhelming. There is no pressure to follow a program or stick to a routine. Instead, wellness comes from gentle movement outdoors, time by the water, restful sleep, nourishing meals, and moments of stillness. It is the kind of reset that feels sustainable and genuinely refreshing.

Dry January and Mindful Sipping by the Bay

Whether you are participating in Dry January or simply leaning into balance, Humphreys offers plenty of ways to indulge mindfully. Enjoy fresh coastal cuisine, zero-proof options, and creative mocktails while still soaking up the social atmosphere at Humphreys Backstage LIVE. It is proof that a night out can still feel special without overindulging.

Work From the Water for a Midweek Reset
